Dear Merle,

I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. After I received your fax, I spoke with Senior Bay Constable Donald Dzenkowski. He and I strongly support your efforts to have the Plum Island Lighthouse re-lit. As you are aware, the light, which is now in use, supplies only a minimal aid to navigation. By making this light fully functional, it will greatly increase navigational safety in this area.

With reference to your long range plans for a cell phone tower, the use of cell phones for marine communication is becoming more the norm as VHF channel 16 has become cluttered with useless chatter. The ability to reach a local tower would aid those dialing 911 thereby enabling them to go directly to Southold Police Department Headquarters instead of some site on the Connecticut shore, which causes delays during emergency situations.

If I can be of any further assistance, please contact me

Very truly yours,
Carlisle E. Cochran, Jr.
Chief of Police
