PRESIDENT'S REPORT
ANNUAL MEETING EAST END LIGHTHOUSES 2004
ACCOMPLISHMENTS - 2004
- East End Lighthouses has become the recognized contact and authority
on lighthouses of Eastern Long Island.
- Organized and hosted eight [8] lighthouse trips and cruises.
- Improved and maintained, thanks to Mike Wiggin, our increasing
popular web site. August requests, 78,417 and pages 4,182. September
requests, 75,352 and pages 4,061.
- We all worked hard to increase our membership. Mark Gebhardt
to bring us up to date.
- Organized and sponsored with the help of Greenport School teachers
a 4th grade lighthouse contest.
- Attempted to resolve suit by the Maritime Museum against East
End Lighthouses regarding Bug Light. Merle Wiggin to give background
with input from directors, Jean Cochran, Mark Gebhardt and Craig
Richter.
- Worked continuously and diligently with Plum Island officials
to encourage the construction of a rock revetment erosion control
structure in front of the lighthouse to prevent its loss, using
the quarried stone obtained from the Sag Harbor breakwater. This
phase of the lighthouse restoration estimated at $1.7 million is
considered to be completely funded.
- Frequently publishing of our events and activities
GOALS FOR ACCOMPLISHING IN 2005
- Have the Plum Island lighthouse re-lit as a Federal Aid to Navigation.
- Co-author with Harlan Hamilton a complete book, including their
history, of the Lighthouses of Southold Town. Special features would
include aerial photos of each and Coast Guard manning and work done
by them including drawings.
- Request the Town of Southold to up-grade their resolution on
the Plum Island lighthouse and to add other presently government
owned lighthouses within the town.
- Request the town to change their present logo based on a miss-spelling
to a lighthouse symbol in recognition of Southold having more lighthouses
than any town in the country.
- Make lots of effort to increase our membership.
- Initiate and hopefully accomplish the needed structural repairs
at Bug Light.
- Explore methods for additional fund raising.
- Publish a quarterly news letter.
- Prepare for the expected divesture of the four lighthouses now
owned by the Coast Guard
- Establish an Advisory Council.
- Plan for an expanded number of activities [see TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
of EVENTS].
- Continue to expand the publishing of our events and activities.
